A pretty original coin with bright reddish-brown surfaces, with some blue-green and yellowish-green undertones and nice obvious luster.  A somewhat typical strike for the date, which is known for commonly slightly “wavy” looking fields, usually due to die wear.  In this case the coin exhibits strong die clashing, with an obvious transfer of Liberty’s facial profile on the left side of the Reverse. There are also some light die cracks, all in all suggesting the dies definitely saw some repolishing to reduce the clashing. However, overall a good strike with full feathers and all four diamonds, although the one on the highest point over Liberty’s hair is a bit soft.  This coin and the similar ANACS 1888 also listed (if still available) are “peas in the pod”, having come out of the same old set and certified in a run of consecutively numbered holders. It is my feeling that this would cross at the same grade today to PCGS or NGC.
