HK-400, SH 18-1, Official Medal souvenir struck for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at San Francisco. Choice Uncirculated, certified NGC MS-63 with interesting color. I had thought that this might be one of the finishes identified as 'Statuary Bronze'. A discussion with Jeff Shevlin however indicated the consensus was that this is just a nicely toned 'Bright Bronze'. The planchets for these were recycled daily by the U. S. Mint, and actual composition varied widely from close to pure Copper, to basically Brass, with the differences in toning accounting for color variation over the last Century. Likely this piece was closer to Copper than Bronze. Despite the slightly limited grade a very attractive example, with lovely red-gold base color with purplish highlights, and I think worthy of a small premium over the usual 'plain jane' HK-400.
