HK-223, St. Gaudens Dollar, a souvenir of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago.  This is SH 6-7.1 CU, the far scarcer 'Chas. Emmerich' version.  Total NGC Pop of 6 versus almost 75 of the commonly seen 'C. Emmerich' variety.  This is the lowest certified example at NGC AU-55, which I think is undergraded - this piece is effectively Unc other than maybe some extremely light 'cabinet friction'.  This is neither here nor there as I submitted it due to features on the piece which may explain why so few examples seem to exist.  Both dies used were near terminal, with a major interior die break on the Obverse that covers Columbus' face.  The Reverse die is broken at 7:00, with significant displacement (sinkage) and a large retained cud connecting the name plate with the rim.  There are also some various smaller die cracks in various places.  Something I have not seen before on the 'Emmerich' pieces is clear recutting on the 'RI' of the name, likely unique to this die.  All these defects as well as the metal flow issues with the use of 'Chas. Emmerich' on the Reverse almost certainly led to retirement of both dies, and production of a new Reverse to try to eliminate striking problems.  More than one Obverse die would almost certainly been already existed, to strike the various other versions of this HK.  I have traced about a half dozen distinct examples of this variety, including 2 of the 5 other NGC certified pieces, and all but one show various stages of cuds/cracks. The present example shows the most extensive die damage, indicating that it was close to the end of production with this Reverse die.  More important and interesting as a research project than 'just' a SH 6-7.1.  Value is relative and is based upon my cost and what I think this piece might be worth.
